Biography:

Dr Zhao is currently the Coordinator of Postgraduate courses for the MMM School. Between 2012 and 2016 he was the Discipline advisor of Department of Materials. His research field is mainly in two areas: Surface Engineering for wear and corrosion resistance of engineering materials in applications such as cutting tools, coated steel construction products, and biomedical implants. For functional materials research, Dr Zhao is active in TiO2 nano-particle synthesis for dye sensitized solar cells and investigation in novel hydrogen storage materials for automobile applications.

Research Interests:

Super-hard/super-tough coatings for cutting tools;
Organic and hybrid surface coatings and inhibitor treatments for corrosion protection of steel products.
Surface engineering on Al, Ti, Mg light light metals for wear corrosion resistance;
Synthesis of novel nano structure TiO2 particles by chemical routine for solar cell and photocatalyst applications;
Property modification of LiAlH4, MgH2 hydrogen storage materials.

Professional Activities:

Mar. 2008 - Present: Mechanical, Materials & Mechatronic (MMM) School, University of Wollongong. Lecturer (Materials department), Member of EMI/BSMC, and ISEM research strengths. Coordinator of the Surface Engineering Laboratory.
Duty: Full time teaching and surface engineering research at MMM; Research on new energy materials at ISEM.
Jan. 2006 - May 2009: Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM), University of Wollongong. Australian Postdoctoral Fellow (APD May 2006-May 2009). Duty: Leading an inter-institutional research team to carry out an ARC Discovery project on superconducting MgB2 thin films for electronic devices and telecommunication applications.
June 1993 - Aug 2002: Special Engineering Materials Division, Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang, China. Research Associate. Duty: Carrying out R&D work along two major directions: one was the fabrication and characterization of alloy films for hydrogen storage with low helium release; the other was the manufacturing of wear resistant high-speed steel cutting weels by powder metallurgy methods.
